May 17 - First Kentucky Derby
Aristides
On May 17, 1875, the horse, Aristides, and his rider, Oliver Lewis, crossed the finish line ahead of the rest of the field at the first ever Kentucky Derby. The horse's owner, H.P. McGrath, and a roaring crowd in the stands looked on. Aristides, a Thoroughbred named after an ancient Greek general, earned extra alfalfa that day in Louisville.

May 3rd Weekend - Marine Mammal Freedom Weekend
Dolphins and whales thrill us with their splendor, intrigue us with their highly developed intelligence and complex societies, and awe us with amazing displays of agility and grace.  Across the world, dolphins and whales are revered as symbols of nature in all its strength and glory.

But dolphins, whales, and other sea mammals are also under attack throughout the world's oceans.  Countries like Japan and Norway are pressing hard to overturn the international ban on commercial whaling.  The U.S. governement has authorized whaling within its shores by the Makah tribe of Washington.  The U.S. military is on the verge of implementing a devasting new sonar system that will blast deafening and potentially fatal sound waves through the world's seas.  The aquarium and public display industry is proliferating worldwide, supplied in part by the brutal drive fisheries in Japan that involve the slaughter of thousands of dolphins annually.

In Defense of Animals focuses on marine mammal freedom (captivity related) issues, but they also lend their voice and support to the efforts to save dolphns, whales, seas, sea lions, sea otters and other creatures whenever they can.

Quote of the Day

How many legs does a dog have if you call the tail a leg? Four. Calling a tail a leg doesn't make it a leg.
